South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) experience high rates of maternal mortality and morbidity which is fueled by a number of issues, including limited availability of quality care. In order to bolster the number of births attended by skilled practitioners, the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM), South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association (SSNAMA) and Société Congolaise de la Pratique Sage-Femme (SCOSAF), with funding from Global Affairs Canada, are working to improve the provision of gender-responsive and quality care provided by midwives.
The project is taking a robust approach to the integration of gender equality and engaged Kore Global to support these efforts. Kore Global led a participatory, interactive gender strategy design process to identify the objectives, strategic interventions and results related to work on gender equality. The approach took an intentional capacity building angle, working together with partners to strengthen capacity on gender-responsive programming and in turn, gender-responsive, respectful maternity care. Kore Global also supported efforts to measure results, through the development of a Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning strategy and leading a participatory process to develop a performance management framework.
