Kore Global was contracted by the British Council in 2021 to undertake comprehensive gender analyses of the education sector in South Asia, including five focal countries (Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nepal, India and Sri Lanka). Our analysis explored gender equality in the education system both from the perspective of students and their access to education and learning, as well as gender and inclusion-related dynamics in the teaching profession. To inform our gender analysis, we drew on a rapid desk-based review of available data and evidence supplemented by key informant interviews with education and gender experts in each of the five countries.
Our team of gender and education experts, adapted an Educational Marginalisation Framework, originally developed by the FCDO’s Girls’ Education Challenge Fund, to explore gender and inclusion related barriers and enablers to gender equality in the education system. Through a series of participatory workshops with British Council staff, we prioritised a set of recommendations to enhance the gender-responsiveness of the organisation’s education programming in the South Asian region.
The final five gender analysis reports include a comprehensive overview of inclusive education in each country including a focus on gender and inclusion-related barriers to teachers professional development, providing a key resource for country teams to inform current and future education programming.
